PRP Hits Back After Cayetano Threatens Lawsuit

Earlier today, I shared with you Ben Cayetano’s response to our story where he repeated his claim that the Pacific Resource Partnership ran a push poll against him. He also threatened to sue PRP chief John White over the “smear campaign.”

This afternoon, PRP hit back, putting out a press release reiterating the claims it made yesterday.

We will not be silenced by bully tactics and threats of lawsuits. We maintain that these illegal donations are directly tied to non bid contracts awarded by the Cayetano administration. They are part of the pay to play culture that permeated the Cayetano campaign and his administration. His record as governor should be reviewed as he tries to resurrect his political career to become Honolulu’s next mayor.

Cayetano’s campaign also reached out today to share the 2006 Attorney General opinion that effectively instructs the Campaign Spending Commission to forgive debts when a campaign is unable to remit money collected from illegal contributions. Here’s the conclusion paragraph, which backs up Cayetano’s argument that he’s not obligated to pay back the $531,000 his campaign owed after he left office a decade ago.

Given that we cannot simply impute knowledge of a false name contribution, it would be inappropriate to penalize the candidate by treating the reference to “escheat” as being the equivalent of a fine. … As such, the term “escheat” is simply a forfeiture of whatever the candidate’s committee has up to the amount of the false name contribution.

The simplest example of this is not telling a tall person that they’re tall.

So much of our lives are shaped by weird rolls of the genetic dice, or fate, or God, or however you choose to interpret that particular mystery. Whether someone is short or tall or originally from Canada or gay or Asian or born to rich parents or redheaded or whatever — that’s not something they chose or cultivated in themselves, and it’s not something they work for.

What makes someone good and valuable is not these traits. It’s the choices they make and the things they do. I’d always rather someone tell me I’m a good writer than that my red hair is pretty, because one of those things is something I work my ass off at, and another is some protein encoding. Both are sweet things to say; one means a lot more to me.

It’s not that you can’t be proud of/pleased by these intrinsic things, but don’t forget that the things you (and others) deserve credit for are the things you have control over.

Hannemann Reiterates Opposition to Same-Sex Marriage

President Barack Obama’s revelation that he supports same-sex marriage led several prominent Democratic Hawaii officials and candidates to do the same. But former Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann, a Democrat who’s running for Congress, told DC808 he still believes “marriage is between a man and a woman.”

Here’s his complete email:

“As I have said before, I believe that marriage is between a man and a woman. However, I also believe that the decisions of the states which have permitted same-sex marriage and/or civil unions, such as Hawaii, should be respected, and I would oppose efforts at the federal level to override those states’ decisions.”

Three of his opponents in the 2nd Congressional District race — Tulsi Gabbard, Esther Kiaaina and Bob Marx — told Civil Beat yesterday that they support same-sex marriage. For Marx, the position was a shift on his stance earlier this year. Gabbard, too, says she has changed her mind on the issue.
