Have you ever longed to discover what’s underneath your cities? Well, just pick up this book on the 2nd floor of the Central Library, where the display books of the month are themed “Plumbing the Depths” (Caves, Oceans, literal plumbing) and right away you’ll have a practical guide. I am researching Fountain Cave for work. Fountain Cave is where the bootlegger Pierre “Pig’s Eye” Parrant (who inspired Saint Paul’s original name) hung out and sold whisky, in by all accounts, a creepy way. But it was also a wonder of Saint Paul, down by the Mississippi River, and people used to take day trips there. Till the 60s, when the state was like “We’re building a highway,” and literally asphalted it closed. It’s a shame.
